Avi’s Cafe

Last week I learned:

1: The oldest bird fossil (Asteriornis maastrichtensis, a.k.a. “The Wonderchicken”) is about 66.7 million years old.

2: Tacoma’s Alfred’s Cafe was called Bill and Ted’s Tavern in the 1940s, well before the first excellent adventure or bogus journey.

Audio Design

I started adding sound effects into the game engine (Unity) last week. It took me a long time to get into audio design projects, but now that I’m here, I’m having a lot of fun.

Stegos are peeping. Trilobites are shuffling. Volcanoes are blorping.

I could have been blorping volcanoes for decades!

I never felt like I knew enough before I could start, but this approach is backwards. I’ve learned so much more from the actual doing than the researching beforehand. There need to be more spaces for women and girls to fail and be encouraged to move forward anyway.

Video: in game engine clip of black and white dino walking through underground tunnel system past trilobites. Multiple pipes of varying hues (gray, yellow, blue, and orange) are seen in the foreground. The concrete walls lining the tunnel are greenish and braced with rusted orange steel beams.

Game Background Art

Good morning!

As many who follow this site already know, the background art for my as yet untitled dino game is loosely based on real spaces in Tacoma. Of course, since the characters in the game are dinosaurs/ other creatures of the Cretaceous Period (for the most part), some liberties have been taken.

Here are a few examples of what I have been working on. What other local landmarks would you like to see represented?

Building a city in Unity is a lot of work, but a heck of a lot of fun.

News and Game Update

Happy Thursday!

Here’s some news on what’s going on in my part of the world.

I was recently invited to be interviewed for TV Tacoma’s City Line show. City of Tacoma staff will discuss the upcoming Arts at the Armory event and more. I’ll post a link when it’s available. I really appreciate the chance to share my work and the support shown for my latest project. It has been a great chance to take risks, consolidate different areas of expertise and skills, and learn new skills.

I am continuing to have fun building environments and sneaking in nods to my adopted home city. Check out some new progress in the video below.
